The public prosecutor of Nice, Montgolfier, discovered a series of scandals surrounding the criminal underworld's role in the legal system around Nice.
One of these scandals was the existence of a highly placed network of paedophiles, including a prominent local judge, John-Paul Renard, resulting from the case of Karim Christian Kamal. Montgolfier described the suppression of the case as "scandalous". Kemal's lawyer was suspended and prosecuted for libel as a result of the accusations.
The other major scandal was the use of the legal apparatus by the Magistrate Renard to run checks on potential members of the french Masonic Grand Lodge.
